I used Lucas' The Fine art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Voice communication Communication class at Baruch College. While I wound up being very impressed with the textbook, I felt that it had a number of significant shortcomings and wound upwardly preferring Engleberg and Daly's Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking course at Wagner Higher. The text is conspicuously stated, updated to refer to current events and issues, and beautifully illustrated. For those reasons, I retrieve the volume is valuable. Only the biggest negative element is its price point. Retailing at over $100, the book is but not affordable for many students at public universities, and asking them to buy it is non ethical, especially when there are so many competing options which are all cheaper--some at one-half the toll or less. The "Connect" multimedia CD is useful but probably part of the high price point, and ultimately I don't think the CD is necessary at all for students to learn effectively from the book. A farther negative element, in my mind, is that Lucas's text is singlemindedly focused on public speaking classes. I retrieve it would be valuable to broaden the gaze of this book to talk over how the skills taught in the book tin be applied to many other situations exterior of the classroom and in daily life.
The title should actually be "The amateur book of high school classroom presentations"... If you're an experienced businessperson, please don't waste your time! The only reason why I'm criticizing the book is because the title is completely misleading... In no style, shape or class is this remotely shut to deserving its score when benchmarking to many other public speaking/ presentation books like: - The art of public speaking (original Carnegie's version) Even "confessions of a public speaker" was ameliorate despite being more entertainment then applied tips. To avoid at all costs unless you're a consummate beginner!

For a textbook this is pretty proficient
I recommend this volume to whoever wants to acquire public speaking. It talks virtually the about fundamental aspects of public speaking, including ethics, purpose, organization, song variety, body language, audition analysis, and etc. It does not talk about "dry theory" cloth. Each definition is followed by several vivid examples. It also has very idea provoking exercises after each chapter. Moreover, it provides several sample speeches in the multimedia that comes with the book. Last but not to the lowest degree, readers can become to the website for the volume and go through more exercises in that location. I find the principles in the book very simple but effective!
This book presents public speaking in an interesting writing manner. The discussions in the book are topical and the instance speeches practise a proficient job of showing the strengths and weaknesses of amateur public speakers in a class.
